Souk Okaz

Souk Okaz used to be the center of Arabic literature and a hub for Arab poets. In fact, poets would travel to this market every year during the first twenty days of the month of Dhul-Qi’dah. It is said that the name "Souk Okaz" was derived from the way Arabs would “Ta’akoz” - meaning the way they would show off their skills and recite poetry in a place where literature reigned. Poets used to travel from everywhere to recite poems in front of the market's large audience. This continued throughout the Rashidun and Bani Umya period up until the year 129H.
